Check out 6 Creative Ideas For Devotional Time With Your Husband to grow spiritual intimacy in your marriage // Episode 12

How is spiritual intimacy in your marriage?

Do you have regular devotional times with your husband?

For most couples, there is so much going on in life that we lose track of this marital priority. We focus on our emotional intimacy and our physical intimacy, but squirm away from spiritual intimacy.

As a marriage counselor, I have seen firsthand the impact that spiritual intimacy has on a marriage. Sure, most couples do not come into counseling because they are looking for greater spiritual connection. But whatever the problems are that bring them through the door, I often find that as they strengthen their spiritual intimacy, it has a positive impact on the problems they are struggling with.

The thing is… it can be very difficult to develop a healthy habit of devotional time in a marriage!

For most of us, it’s difficult enough to find individual time for Bible reading and prayer. We get too busy, our thoughts are distracted, the Bible confuses us, and we start to rely on a “verse of the day” app rather than investing time diving into God’s Word ourselves.

If it’s hard enough to do this on our own as individuals, how can we get two people to now come together on the same page for regular devotional times?

Check out episode 12 of the podcast for six creative ideas that you can try in your marriage to get devotional time with your husband – and deepen the spiritual intimacy in your marriage today.

Episode Show Notes

Today, we dig into the topic of spiritual intimacy in our marriages. Specifically, we are looking at making time as a couple to read God’s Word and pray together.

(But really, you’ll get so much more from listening to the whole episode!)

Why is it important to have devotional time as a couple?

  • It gets you on the same page as you seek the Lord together.
  • It creates spiritual intimacy which bonds you as a couple.
  • It is a protective factor for your marriage.

What if your husband doesn’t want to do this or you want to use the time differently?

  • Talk through why each of you feels the way you do – not trying to convince, but to understand each other.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit to put you on the same page together, so you desire the same thing.
  • Once you agree to try a devotional time together, make a list of possible ways to do it and then experiment together. Pick one option and commit to it for a month.

Six ideas for how to have a devotional time together:

  • Add it into another part of your routine, like while you have breakfast together.
  • Read the same thing, but at different times that work for you individually. Then come together to discuss and pray.
  • Listen to the audio Bible during an activity together.
  • Replace some of your TV or social media scrolling time with a video or sermon series to watch together.
  • Connect your spiritual intimacy with your physical intimacy time.
  • Try out the routine my husband and I are currently enjoying: we read The One Year Bible before bed and then read out loud together the One Year Praying for your Child devotional of the day, including the prayer it provides. Find those two books right here.
